Product Description

Introducing Kindle™ Three years ago, we set out to design and build an entirely new class of device—a convenient, portable reading device with the ability to wirelessly download books, blogs, magazines, and newspapers. The result is Amazon Kindle. We designed Kindle to provide an exceptional reading experience. Thanks to electronic paper, a revolutionary new display technology, you’ll find reading Kindle’s screen is as sharp and natural as reading ink on paper—and nothing like the strain and glare of a computer screen. Kindle is also easy on the fingertips. It never becomes hot, and is designed for ambidextrous use so both “lefties” and “righties” can read comfortably at any angle for long periods of time. We wanted Kindle to be completely mobile and simple to use for everyone, so we made it wireless. No PC and no syncing needed. Using the same 3G network as advanced cell phones, we deliver your content using our own wireless delivery system, Amazon Whispernet. Unlike WiFi, you’ll never need to locate a hotspot. There are no confusing service plans, yearly contracts, or monthly wireless bills—we take care of the hassles so you can just read. With Whispernet, you can be anywhere, think of a book, and get it in one minute. Similarly, your content automatically comes to you, wherever you are. Newspaper subscriptions are delivered wirelessly each morning. Most magazines arrive before they hit newsstands. Haven’t read the book for tomorrow night’s book club? Get it in a minute. Finished your book in the airport? Download the sequel while you board the plane. Whether you’re in the mood for something serious or hilarious, lighthearted or studious, Kindle delivers your spontaneous reading choices on demand. We’re very proud to introduce Kindle and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. - The Amazon Kindle Team

Customer Reviews

Buy it. Buy it now! 5
I was going to wait until a new improved kindle came out. I was going to wait until the price came down. I was going to wait until I could afford it. But oh, I wanted one. And my husband took pity on me and bought it for me. ( Love you, honey!) And now after using it for a few months I am ready to write my review.

First, I need to tell you that I have a library of thousands ( yes, literally thousands) of books. And they are all in storage while we full time it in a motor home. (No, we are not driving all over in a huge gas hog, we are planting orchards and gardens on our 7 acres and living in the trailer until we can build a home.) They take up nearly all of the storage unit, box after box. The authors I love are nearly all of print and libraries have gotten rid of the old books. I’ve spent a fortune over the years tracking them down. I miss my book friends! You readers know what I am talking about. And now thanks to kindle I have them back. And more besides. Oh, miracle of technology! I love, love, love my kindle.

We are out in the sticks where the whispernet seldom works. No problem! Just go online and download the books. I did try the wireless on a trip to town and it was lightning fast. And when we couldn’t find the Japanese restaurant we went online and looked it up. That was an amazing and unexpected feature. Just surf the net on your kindle. Sure could have used that feature on all our cross country journeys.

I read so much about the page turning problem, it almost put me off from purchasing. I must say, I have not had any difficulties with it at all. From day one, I was using all the features with ease. The larger print is especially appreciated. And the screen truly is non glare. Wish they could do that on computer moniters.

My favorite 18th and 19th century authors are free for the downloading at project gutenberg. But I find the collections from MobileReference well worth the 4.79 and have by now aquired most of them.

Any true bibliophile and lover of literature needs one of these gizmos.

I realize it’s pricy. I will not be eating out, buying any new clothes or buying cappucinos for a couple of years. It also counts as my birthday and Christmas present.

It was worth it! Absolutely.

I like the Kindle4
I received the Kindle as an unexpected gift well before I was able to purchase one for myself.

-I’ll agree with some other reviews I’ve read that say the page turn buttons are placed a little awkwardly. I’ve definitely skipped forward a few pages, or moved ahead a page before I wanted to, but it’s not any worse than reading a book in the wind and loosing a page or two.

-I would have loved if the device came with lighting, but it’s nothing to cry over.

-From a size and weight perspective I find it easy to hold and manageable. I have small hands so I was glad to see that it had a comfortable fit for me.

-I love having the capability to read online. I have a lot of friends who blog and being able to read their updates directly from the Kindle is wonderful when I’m not able to access a computer. It’s definitely a feature I’d like to see continued (at no cost) if possible.

Overall, I definitely give the Kindle **** stars. I can take my books anywhere and get a new one anytime. I really like my Kindle.

I love the Kindle!5
The Kindle is amazing! I can get new books in seconds, it’s easy on the eyes, easy to use and I can even get online and check my email! It’s expensive, but worth every penny.
